System Mapping
& AI
An interactive online training to harness the power of AI to enhance your System Mapping process
This training is for System Mappers eager to explore the power of AI in an engaging and hands-on way. Through inspiring inputs, interactive exercises, and examples, you'll gain everything you need to bring AI into your own mapping practice.
About the Training
After this training, you’ll be able to...
Accelerate your pre-mapping groundwork
Use AI to surface relevant research, frameworks, and variables before the mapping room opens, saving hours of desk research and starting your team from a richer foundation.
Use AI as a rigorous thinking partner
Treat AI as a sounding board that asks the questions exposing hidden assumptions, missing variables, and loops whose causal direction deserves a second look.
Translate complex maps into action-ready narratives
Use AI to bridge the gap between the mapping room and decision-makers, turning causal loop diagrams into clear, compelling stories that make system insights accessible to audiences who were never in the room.
Integrate AI into your real mapping practice
Leave with concrete prompts, habits, and integration points you can apply in your next project, not just understanding what AI can do, but knowing where and how to bring it in.
Who is the Training for?
This training is designed for professionals from diverse backgrounds who want to deepen their understanding of complex systems with the support of AI.
Innovation Consultants
… who want to use AI-enhanced system mapping to surface hidden dynamics in client projects faster and design interventions with greater precision.
NGO Project Leads
… who want to map complex problem landscapes with AI support, to identify high-leverage interventions and justify them to funders and partners.
Researchers and Lecturers
… who want to use AI to accelerate the structuring of research data into system maps, and help students build intuition for complexity and systemic relationships.
Policy Makers
… who want to use system mapping to make the interdependencies between policies visible and use AI to test how interventions might play out across stakeholders.
Curriculum & Approach
The training consists of four online sessions, each 2,5 hours long, featuring a mix of lectures, exercises, and teamwork on a real-life case study. You’ll also have the opportunity to work on an individual topic in between the sessions.

Introduction to the AI role: Knowledge Aggregator
Introduction into the Case Study
Activities
Get to know your team
Use NotebookLM to collect research data and elicit variables
-
In this session, you'll step into the role of Kick-Starter, letting AI generate a rough first draft of a system map. Your team will then take that draft apart, challenging and enriching it with your own data and expertise.
Lectures
Introduction to the AI role: Kick-Starter
Activities
Generate an initial system map with Miro/Claude, then enrich and critique it as a team.
-
In this session, you learn how to turn AI into a sparring partner. You'll use Claude and ChatGPT to stress-test your system map and explore leverage points and potential system interventions.
Inputs
Introduction to the AI role: Critical Thinking Companion & Analyst
Activities
Start a critical conversation with Claude, collect feedback on the map you've created, and make adaptations
Explore leverage points and stress-test causal assumptions using Claude and ChatGPT
-
In this session, your system map finally becomes a story, one that can travel beyond the mapping room and reach people who were never in it. You'll wrap up by writing your own AI manifesto, a personal stance on where AI fits into your work and where it doesn't.
Inputs
Introduction to the AI role: Storyteller
Process Structure of AI aided System Mapping
Activities
Reflect on your own evolving practice in using AI
Translate learning into your daily work
Methodology applied
in the training
In this training we focus on Causal Loop Diagrams (CLDs), a powerful tool from System Dynamics,
to help you understand causal relationships and pinpoint leverage points for system change.
AI tools used
in the training
In this training, we focus on practical applications of generative AI for system mapping. We will explore how different AI tools can support various stages of the mapping process. You’ll also get a complete overview of current specialized tools in the field.
We work with tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, NotebookLM, and Systemic, demonstrating their strengths, limitations, and best use cases.

“System Mapping as a tool and as a process were highly valuable for our work. For us, the map is a summary of reality and it helps us to see the problems and relationships more clearly. The process allowed us to bring together stakeholders, hear new perspectives and build coalitions for action. The analysis sparked new ideas on how we can make the landscape more sustainable and productive and helped us to develop a more holistic theory of change.”
James Leslie,
Global Programme Manager for Food Systems, United Nation Development Program
"The System Mapping Training provided invaluable insights into visually breaking down intricate issues, emphasising feedback loops, and crafting compelling systems stories. Now, navigating and understanding vast amounts of information at the onset of a new UX and Service Design project, has become clearer, thanks to the systematic and effective techniques I acquired through this training."
Giuseppe de Cesare,
Experience Designer, Visual Strategist and Facilitator
“As a professor at Cape Breton University in Nova Scotia, Canada, I found this training highly valuable and directly applicable to graduate-level teaching. I now actively use the systems mapping tools acquired through the training in my Organizational Behaviour and Comparative Development courses for MBA students. These tools have significantly enhanced students’ ability to analyze complex systems and real-world challenges, and they consistently find the approach practical, insightful, and highly beneficial.”
